Function 06 — Marketing

Marketing: consistent, opt-in, and measured by replies.

For most Zimbabwean SMEs marketing is a Facebook page and a WhatsApp status. Automation makes it regular; it does not make it good, so the copy still needs a person.

What gets done by hand today

  • A specials broadcast to everyone in the phone, including people who bought once in 2023.
  • Posts when someone remembers, usually the owner, usually at night.
  • A Google listing with last year's hours and no reviews.
  • Ads that send people to a page that says "WhatsApp us", where nobody answers on Saturday.

The four opportunities

IDOpportunityHow it worksTool classEffortImpact
M1Opt-in broadcasts with marketing templatesMonthly specials to customers who opted in; per-message cost, so lists stay clean.WhatsApp Business PlatformMediumSolid
M2Weekly posts drafted with AI and scheduledOne hour a week produces the month of Facebook and WhatsApp status posts.AI assistant + Meta Business Suite schedulerLowSolid
M3Google Business Profile and review requestsAfter a completed job, a message asks for a review with the link; the profile stays current.Google Business Profile + utility templateLowSolid
M4Click-to-WhatsApp ads with automatic qualifying questionsThe ad opens a chat; three questions qualify the lead before a person picks it up.Meta ads + WhatsApp flowsMediumHigh

Effort: Low = an afternoon with free tools; Medium = a week and a subscription; High = a project with outside help. Impact is relative to a typical 5–30-person business; run the ROI calculator with your own figures.

Worked example (illustrative)

A furniture maker in Mutare posts four times a week: 45 minutes each to think, photograph, write and post. With a monthly one-hour session — an AI assistant drafting captions from a list of pieces and prices, the owner editing, and Meta Business Suite scheduling (M2) — the weekly cost drops to about 30 minutes: 2.5 hours back a week. The measurable outcome is not hours; it is WhatsApp enquiries per post, which the shared inbox (C5) can count.

Zimbabwe notes
  • Marketing templates are the most expensive WhatsApp message. Under Meta's per-message pricing (since 1 July 2025) marketing is billed per delivered template and does not get volume discounts; +263 numbers are on the "Rest of Africa" rate since 1 October 2025. Keep the list to people who opted in and measure replies per 100 sent.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a 72-hour free window. Every message in that window, templates included, is free — so the qualifying flow (M4) costs ad spend, not message spend.
  • Facebook is smaller than WhatsApp here. DataReportal counted 2.10 million Facebook users in Zimbabwe in January 2025 against 15.2 million mobile connections. Facebook is where you are found; WhatsApp is where you sell.

Do not automate

Replies to public comments and reviews — a person, quickly. And do not let an AI assistant invent product claims; give it the facts and edit what comes back.
